‘Unfettered ink’ has been selected to exhibit in 'OPEN PAGE - The Art of The Creative Process' at Hong Kong Design Centre’s new design landmark, the Design Spectrum @ 7 Malloy Street from 11 Oct till 17 Nov.

Curated by Amy Chow, the exhibition focuses on good editorial, material, form, format and finishes in Asian editorial design. We are humbled to have the project being selected as part of the showcases.

Sharing session at SEARCH book launch

SEARCH is a visual documentation book, curated and published by our friends at LIE, showcasing over 40 design studios in South-East Asia countries. The book will be launched on April 27, 2019 at APW Bangsar, Kuala Lumpur. Several featured design studios from Malaysia, Singapore, Philipines and Thailand are invited to share insights on running a design studio.

Sharing at Go-Jek HQ Creative Labs

As an invited luminary guest, Roots gave a creative sharing session on the studio design process and challenges using real world projects as anecdotes to a crowd of designers from Go-Jek Creative Labs in Jakarta, organised by Adobe SEA.

This is followed by an intense 3-hr creative jam where teams collaborate to conceptualise a full breadth of pitch proposal on the challenge theme of social impact by Go-Jek.

Japan Package Design Association (JPDA) Delegate studio visit

Roots is honoured to host a studio visit for JPDA Delegates from Tokyo (Japan) on February 14. The delegates include designers and representatives from major Japanese brands - Suntory, Glico, Asahi, House Food, Kao, Toyo Seikan and many others.

Using studio work as case studies, Roots moderated the exchanges and conversations on promoting understanding in intercultural design, and trends in creativity globally.

Tokyo TDC Annual Awards 2019

Good news to cap off the year - 'Portraits of Sok Sabay' has been selected as 'Excellent Work' in Tokyo TDC Annual 2019.

This book shares the equal credit with all 34 individuals of Sok Sabay, fantastic portraitures captured soulfully by Stefen Chow, Marie who is the pillar of Sok Sabay, and last but not the least, Francois de Moulliac, who made this project possible.

Talk session at Group TRON Creative Day in Taipei

Group TRON, one of the largest advertising networks in Taiwan, has invited Roos to give a sharing session at their annual Group TRON Creative Day. This one-day event, held in Taipei annually, invites speakers from China, Korea, Thailand, Singapore and Europe to exchange and share creativity in the fields of social, culture, technology and design.

Jonathan will be giving an edition of "Thinking Creatively Inside Very Small Boxes" for the talk, exploring the values and boundaries of creativity in running a small independent design studio.

It is official now. Roots is the partnered branding agency under J. Walter Thompson (JWT) consortium for the upcoming Singapore Bicentennial.

Design Camp Nara: Baaku

Our creative director Jonathan was invited as one of the three designers from Asia to participate in Design Camp Nara in Japan.

The residency programme ran from 11th to 20th October. It involved a short homestay with a local poultry farm family in Nara prefecture, and conceived a design proposal for the business over a 3-day period at the end of the programme.

Smart Bus Stop in The Straits Times, Life

We shared with journalist Natasha Zachariah a future bus stop design we've envisioned — bus stops that are conceptualised to link with national Meteological Services for geo-weather data. With that information, these shelters will always have their roofs automatically aligned to face against the Sun to provide maximum cover for passengers underneath.

Talk at Nanyang Polytechnic

Jonathan was invited to host a talk session at Nanyang Polytechnic on June 30.

Speaking to a hall of student from year 1 to 3, he shared the studio naturally chaotic design processes and resulting work throughout the years, how cross-polination of different disciplines and parties including client, as part of the creative process to push the studio work forward.

Golden Pin Design Award 2015 — Finalist for Best Design

After a rigorous Final Selection, we are delighted that 'systems14' is one of the finalists for this year Golden Pin Design Award 2015 Best Design category.

The Final Selection jury, chaired by renowned Japanese designer Naoto Fukasawa, had selected 57 finalists from the 565 Design Mark winners. The winners of Best Design will be announced in December 10.

Lecture in Kaohsiung, Taiwan

Let The Papers Sing To You

Collaborating with Victor Low (Affixen) and Edwin Toh (Garage Interactive), Roots conceptualised and designed an interactive installation called 'Let The Papers Sing To You' as part of the creative showcase in the SingaPlural 2015 Festival.

This installation explores the unique experiences of tactile and sound sensory of papers. "Let The Papers Sing To You" is now exhibiting from 10 - 15 March, 11am - 10pm at SingaPlural, 99 Beach Road.

Cannes Lions 2012
